Research Interests:
My research is focused on understanding the mechanisms that underlie experience-dependent changes in synaptic strength in the cortex. Studies of ocular dominance plasticity in the visual system have provided a rich contribution to our understanding of naturally occurring receptive field plasticity at physiological and anatomical levels. Using ocular dominance plasticity as a model, I am investigating the hypothesis that rapid synaptic remodeling contributes to functional changes in synaptic strength. In my research, I plan to implement molecular virology and transgenic techniques to illuminate neural circuits underlying the primary visual pathway. Used in combination with high-resolution microscopy, these technologies will be used to study the contribution of structural changes to the functional plasticity of cortical circuitry.
